Free Summer Reading Printables & 100 Book Challenge
Does your family do a summer reading challenge? There weather is quickly heating up here in sunny Northern California, making reading a favorite way to pass the summer days – inside in our air conditioned house! Whether you just want to inspire your kids to read more books or you want to really challenge them to read 100 books over the summer, I hope you’ll like these summer reading challenge and 100 Book Challenge printables!
My free printable includes a reading log split up into 10 books per page. I also have included bookmarks for 10 books each so that your child can earn a new bookmark for each set of 10 books he or she reads. This allows you to use these printables for an entire 100 Book Challenge, or set a goal that works for your child and your family.
Each set of 10 books earns a new summer icon. These coordinate with more reward printables in the paid download.
Here’s what’s included in each download:
If you’re looking for a printable 100 Book Challenge for the summer, I know your child will love these. What’s great about these printables is that you can adapt them for different ages and reading levels for any type of summer reading goal. Your littlest ones can earn a sticker for each board book they read with mom. Your beginning readers can earn a sticker for each early reader book they read. Kids transitioning into chapter books can earn a sticker for each chapter they read, while older kids can earn for each chapter book they read.
Here are 5 tips for a great summer reading challenge:
#1 Go the library often – once a week if you can.
If you establish a day of the week to always go to the library, your kids will be more motivated to finish their books in time to return them. You can also have them set more manageable goals while you’re there. If you go every week, try suggesting each child check out 7 books, one book a day. Or alter this goal to fit your child’s level.
#2 Let your child read some books below their level.
While you don’t want your 8 year old earning stickers for baby board books, it can be very helpful and encouraging to allow them to read some books slightly below their level. It is very motivating to go on a shorter adventure and close the cover of a book you finished in one sitting.
#3 Create a centralized place for library books.
No momma likes library fines! Create a centralized place for library books in your home from which your children will “check out” a book during their reading time. Enforce that they return the book to the library book spot so you never lose a book! If your kids read library books in the car, have a bin or bucket in the car to hold all the books when they’re not being read.
#4 Lightly schedule reading time into your summer days.
You may have kids that will pick up a book when they’re bored, but if not all your kids are like that you may want to find a routine time during your summer days that is conducive to reading for your family. This can be at breakfast time before all the kids are awake, during baby’s nap time, while riding in the car, etc. Our favorite time for reading books is once all the kids are in bed. The sun goes down later in the summer so I let them stay up a little bit at night and snuggle up with a good book.
#5 Have your kids share their progress each night at dinner.
Rewards like stickers and charts are a great motivator, but they will mean more if your kids get to share them with the family. Try posting reward charts near the dinner table or just go around and have each child share how many books they’ve read so far. This keeps reading fresh in their minds and will help them achieve their summer reading goals.
With love,
Christy
